Latest Operational Changes and Key Updates
The completion of Emirates’ move on Tuesday was a highlight, enabled by the first use of Terminal 2’s second pier and newly opened double air bridges that support A380 operations. Previously, the airline’s superjumbo could only use gates in Terminal 1.
Chris Woodroofe, Managing Director of Manchester Airport, said the transition represented “a moment that’s been 10 years in the making”. He added:
“Seeing all airlines in their new £1.3bn home is fantastic. A particular highlight for me was watching the iconic A380 arrive into Terminal 2 for the first time.”
With the new pier open, the airport will continue final construction on the remaining parts of the terminal, including:
- Great Northern Market dining area
- Boutique Mall, featuring Chanel and Fever Tree
- The first Wetherspoon inside the new terminal
- 13 new flexible stands and gates now under construction
- A new chandelier walkway inspired by the Venetian glass chandeliers of Terminal 1 in the 1980s and 1990s
The last arriving flight into the historic Terminal 1 extension – an easyJet service from Antalya – marked the end of an era for the soon-to-close building.
What’s Changing at Terminal 3
As Terminal 2 expands, Terminal 3 is entering a significant refurbishment cycle. Space released by the closure of Terminal 1 is allowing the airport to:
- Build a new entrance with improved access
- Install the same next-gen security scanners already in use in Terminal 2
- Add 40% more seating in Departures
- Introduce new food and retail outlets
- Open a new 500-seat Sporting Chance bar overlooking the airfield
- Expand dining areas with an additional 200 seats
- Improve Arrivals facilities with additional landside services
These enhancements ensure that Ryanair passengers – who continue to split between Terminals 1 and 3 for now – will see improved facilities over the next year.
